With summer here, it is especially important that we all take responsibility for protecting our water systems. Here are some guidelines to help you be water-friendly:
1.Slow the flow of stormwater runoff. Slowing the flow helps prevent pollutions for washing off your yard into local water resources. By minimizing erosion, creating mulched beds, planting a rain garden, and saving your rainwater you are reducing the amount of stormwater runoff.
2.
Fertilize your yard: Less is Best. Its pretty easy...read the label, and don't over fertilize. Most yards don't even need fertilization, and certainly no more than once or twice a year.
3. Protect your Shoreline. If you live on the shore of a lake, pond, river, or stream, your stewardship is especially important. Establish a buffer edge and a 'no-mow' zone along the bank. A buffer of taller plants and grass will filter stormwater from your yard before it reaches the water system.
There are many things we can do to protect our drinking water. For more information, please contact the Spartanburg Water System or SPACE, or take a look at our Watershed Project page.
