Fall Bird Count
This is t he 24 hour migratory bird count for Spartanburg County. Contact the compiler, Lyle Campbell [lcampbell@uscupstate.edu] if you can contribute some time in your yard or in the field. The count is county wide, just note your location, start and stop time, and the species seen, and the total number of each. For example:

Spartanburg Water's 22nd Annual Lake Sweep

Spartanburg Water is sponsoring its 22nd annual Lake Sweep event on Saturday, September 18, 2010 from 8 a.m. to Noon at Lake Bowen Park. Participants will meet at Lake Bowen Park near the boat landing and Lake Bowen Wardens' Office (Lake Bowen Park: 8515 Highway 9 Inman, SC 29349).Teams of five people will be organized, and prizes will be awarded. Each team member will receive a Lake Sweep T-shirt, a free lunch, and a raffle ticket for prizes. The event is free of charge.
In addition, they ’ll also be honoring their Lake Sweep T-Shirt contest winner. In celebration of Earth Day in April, fifth grade students in Spartanburg County schools were given the opportunity to submit t-shirt designs for Lake Sweep. The first place winner’s design was used to create the t-shirts for this participants. This year’s winner is Elvira Kondor of Holly Springs-Motlow Elementary School.

Appalachian Trail Hike
Hike the Appalachian Trail with Jack Seitz, former president of the Spartanburg Chapter of the Sierra Club. You have the option of staying overnight in the hiker's barn, and the total miles hiked will be 7, 3.5 in and 3.5 out. Rain date: September 25.
